Read it for the Jonah Hex Story

The Western genre was once one of the most popular - perhaps the most popular - genre of comic books. Every major (and quite a few minor) comics publishers had western heroes. But, since the early 1970s there has been only one Western hero who has survived, and almost consistanly seen print - Jonah Hex. Jonah Hex fans are kind of like fans of the band Rush. Fervent in their adulation of something that leaves everyone else scratching their heads and wondering, "what's so special about that?"

Reading All-Star Western (volume 2), #10 might not make you a convert to the cult-like legions of Hex fans, but it sure can help you understand what makes Jonah Hex special. There are 3 stories in this comic - one starring Jonah Hex, one starring El Diablo, and one starring Bat Lash - and the Jonah Hex story is clearly the best of the bunch. In it a small Western town called Paradise hires gunfighter Hex to bring down a gang which has been terrorizing the town. Though Hex is successful in his efforts, and the townspeople are (mostly) grateful, they still look down upon him. Steeped in the Sergio Leone style Western film, this is a kind of cowboy story that goes beyond the traditional horse opera typified by the El Diablo and Bat Lash stories in this same issue.

Read this for the Jonah Hex story - skip the Bat Lash and El Diablo ones.
