All New X-Men Special #1 Review – “This Doc Oct Can’t Be Me!”

    Intro

When I first saw the series from the solicitations I was really hyped. Mainly, because I was hoping for Peter Parker to return in Doc Oct’s body and somehow made himself to look younger. Then the young X-Men’s Jean Grey finds out that Superior Spider-Man is really Doc Oct and it’s up to the young X-Men to help Peter Parker get his body back (Don’t get me wrong, I love Superior Spider-Man very much. But I’m hoping for the story of Peter Parker returning someday.). Sadly, this story gives us something totally different. But despite that it’s still an interesting story I recommend picking up.

    Story

The young X-Men are having a good o’ time exploring the wonders of New York City. Beast runs into a sweet girl and meets her professor. But here comes Doctor Octopus and Superior Spider-Man to an all-out battle. So, who is this Doctor Octopus and what will these young heroes will do about it?

    The Good

Even though I didn’t get the story I was hoping for, it’s still a good issue. Mike Costa does very good on all the characters’ interactions and personalities. So he has a pretty good idea on who the characters are. They have all the same humor like what Bendis does in All-New X-Men, so this is a really good thing. Beast was very charming to this girl and he showed off his intellect which came out quite funny too. Superior Spider-Man is still obnoxious as ever and already the young X-Men perceived him as a jerk as their first meeting. So, it was great to have all this. The art is beautiful too with nice bright colors. The style seems very funny and edgy. So overall, this is a good book.

    The Bad

There’s nothing really bad with this issue. It’s just a missed opportunity of Superior Spider-Man getting caught for not being Peter. So that’s about it really.

    Verdict

I’m going to give this issue a 4.5/9.8 out of 5/10 stars. This is really good book you will definitely enjoy. It’s got all the good humor and interactions you would like to see. The art has a pretty nice style and there’s something to look forward to with the Indestructible Hulk! I also noticed to Comic Con there’s a little Easter egg of Several Industries which is a little nod to All-New X-Factor series for next year. The only downside is not having the story I was hoping for. But I still recommend getting this issue. Also, if you want to keep tuning into the story make sure you get Indestructible Hulk Special #1 because there won’t be an All-New X-Men Special #2. (Laughs)
