The Good

David Nakayama's cover is beautiful. It's completely stunning and has such a cool presence to it.

The design for the character, whom we're assuming is Scourge, is pretty dang cool. It's a pretty simple white trenchcoat and white skull head, However, it really works and looks incredibly cool. This is the one thing about this book that will attract readers and pique their interest. This book still has a ton of potential to work.

The Bad

The best way to describe ALL-NEW ULTIMATES is "frustrating." Most of the time, the reader is going to have to play a guessing game to figure out what's going on and which characters are which. This is the biggest problem with the book. Problems seems to magically solve themselves off panel, while the story chaotically jumps between Spider-Man and the rest of the team as they all try to figure out the mystery of the drugs.

The story, from what you can piece together, feels like a story readers have seen quite a few times recently, except this is not as coherent. Aside from that, the dialogue is bland and any character could be put next to those word balloons and for the most part, it wouldn't make a difference. A few times, characters speak with these cringe-worthy one-liners and most of the time, it doesn't even feel like the character should be saying it. Characters in their late teens are using slang from 20 years ago, and Spider-man comes off as a bit of a Bombshell stalker.

You can't have a good, overall book without some good art and that's another place this issue really drops the ball. The characters look the same. There's so many characters with long faces and the reader will have to decide who is who based on their haircut or haircolor. Character's faces do not remain consistent either. Their eyes bug-out and it looks silly.

The Verdict

ALL-NEW ULTIMATES is the biggest disappointment of the post-Cataclysm era. Both the story and the art are a flop, and while a street-level super-hero team, in the Ultimate Universe, is a fantastic idea, it falls so flat here and miss its mark by a long shot. While the cover is really cool looking and the new vigilante character looks cool, everything else about this issue is a pass.

Been a while since we saw a 1, I think the last time was Joker's Daughter.

It's disappointing to see a negative one star review of the series. For characters that really drew in an audience pre cataclysm, its sad to see the story going downhill

Wow. Knowing how big an Ultimate Universe fan you are Mat, this must really sting. I have been slowly working my way through Ultimate Spider-Man from the beginning but I thought about jumping onto these new books. I doubt I will now. I haven't been seeing good things about any of them except Spider-Man.

they've been giving this whole series mediocre reviews. I'm surprised.....yet I'm not surprised. issue 3 was on my list of comics to get, but I forgot to get it.

You gave this one star and yet you were willing to give Ultimate FF, 4 stars despite both books being as bad as each other.

Both books feature the exact same problems, bad dialogue bad art work and bad story progression?

I honestly thought this one was better than the previous two. the story was better, the art was better. The female faces do still mostly look the same which is a huge issue but they were notably better. Its still not good but its definitely better. i thought 2.5/5 for me personally and now that this first parts over hopefully it cleans up and gets better

Wow. I really want this book to succeed. A superhero team consisting of two black guys and the rest are females. One of the black guys BFF is a chubby Asian kid. This is something that I don't see much of in comics. Oh well, either this book will get cancelled or get a new writer.

ULTIMATE FF has a solid story and dialgoue. The problem is the artist is awful and fails to convey solid art and a solid story artistically. ULTIMATE FF is far better than this book; however, I don't compare books' ratings while reviewing. I'm not thinking about UFF while reviewing this.

Being the (self-proclaimed) 2nd biggest Ultimate Universe fan on the Vine, right behind you Matt, I feel your pain. I really want this book to do SO WELL because it has SO MUCH potential but it just …. it just really sucks. I want to drop this book so badly but my love for the Ultimate Universe won't let me stop supporting it. Something needs to happen to this book really quickly to save it and by that I mean a creative change. The issue was just bad and I struggled to force myself through it.

Next issue will be Miles Morales waking up in bed, crying: "What a nightmare- such horrible dream!" Then next panel will be Ganke, building a lego diorama of Cataclysm.

What a huge disappointment. I haven't dropped an Ultimate Comics book every and it took me two issues to drop this. There is such HUGE potential with this team and it is being wasted on a crap story with terrible art. I don't know what Marvel is thinking with the Ultimate line. You have Ultimate spider-man with both stellar art and writing, FF with great writing and awful art, and the New Ultimates with terrible art and writing. They need to get some better talent on this book STAT. and Give Fialkov a better penciler for crying out loud!

I really dig the art on FF, and it certainly is a different (unique?) visual experience.

It is unique, its just that to me on most panels its very muddy. If they could sharpen the colors and pencilings they would have an extremely pleasant visual experience on their hands.

A book has to be really bad for Comicvine to give it a 1 star. ouch.

Why is anyone surprised? The Ultimate universe has been going downhill since Jeph Loeb was allowed to write any part of it. Hickman showed promise, and then quickly abandoned it entirely once he realized that the damage to the entire universe was irrevocable. The majority of the characters in the universe had either been killed or put into retirement through truly awful writing. We are talking about a universe where Peter Parker is killed for absolutely no reason at all, other than for shock-value, and so Brian Michael Bendis can pretend that he's "visionary" and full of "groundbreaking" material.

Seriously, when Kitty Pryde is the most interesting mutant still alive and active in your universe, and you intend on continuing this trend for years to come, it's pretty obvious there are structural, fundamental flaws.

Yes. Practically every other character is dead, emotionally and physically wrecked beyond almost any conceivable redemption, or simply inactive. Somehow Hawkeye has managed to survive this long, though.
