I suppose the title should be a clue.
I suppose the title should be a clue.

Let me be clear… I’ve never jumped in my seat with fright over something in a comic. “BOO!” just ain’t as scary when it’s read as when it’s heard. Cheap scares don’t quite work in print, no matter how gory things get. What does work is the slowly-burning idea - - the unsettling notion that gets in your head and won’t go away for weeks, months and (as you’ll see here) years. That’s the really scary stuff.

So what are some truly scary comics ever, by Tom Pinchuk’s estimation?

FROM HELL. This whole tome is doom upon dread. The portion where the Ripper becomes the “spirit of the 20 century” and simultaneously pervades almost every serial killing in 1900s is chilling tour de force . You sit in the passenger seat for a ride through all these dreadful secret truths - - as if this were some black mass-style inversion of all the history you’ve come to accept. The mutilation scenes should be mentioned, as well. They’re stomach-churning, to be sure, but what’s more disturbing about them is the rhythm achieved by their 9x9 layouts. You’re witnessing murder conducted to a cadence and all the Ripper’s little pauses and asides throughout are like the affected motions of some death-worshipping performance art.  I’m getting queasy just thinking about that again. == TEASER ==

     He can.
     He can.

ANIMAL MAN. Grant Morrison’s celebrated run on this title has a dreamy surrealism with a nightmarish undercurrent that frequently creeps on up to the surface. Chas Truog and Doug Hazlewood’s art is perfect for this comic, because their clean-line styles are juxtaposed with some truly foreboding, heady concepts.   Morrison’s always been fascinated with metafiction, but this, more than of any of his works on the subject,   conveys a sense that the sacred trust a reader has with the work has been violated - - either with Animal Man becoming self-aware or the Psycho Pirate hijacking the fiction. Stand-outs are, of course, the “Coyote Gospel” issue and the infamous moment when Animal Man turns to see you, the reader.

Believe it or not, the Greyshirt is the least spooky story in this issue.
Believe it or not, the Greyshirt is the least spooky story in this issue.

TOMORROW STORIES #1. I’ve got to list another Alan Moore story because, let’s be honest, he’s written a lot of scary stuff. To get even more specific, I’m talking about this issue’s COBWEB short. I don’t what it was about the combination of Melinda Gebbie’s flowery, erotic line work and the silent film-style “Doll-O-Vision” segments, but this short still freaks me about, some eleven years after I read it. I can’t really even describe - - you’d have to see it yourself, if you dare.

Anyway, I figure that’s enough for here. What comics have given somehow even frightened you brave Comic Vine maniacs?

-- Tom Pinchuk is the writer of UNIMAGINABLE for Arcana Studios and HYBRID BASTARDS! for Archaia. HYBRID BASTARDS! is available  here and UNIMAGINABLE is available here for pre-order on Amazon.com.

I've only been scared one time in a comic. There is a flashback issue of Starman starring Ted Knight. He is trying to capture the New Prairie Witch thinking in the process he'll discover she has stolen the technology of his cosmic rod to power her broom. After she's caught he realizes it's just a broom. Next panel Tony Harris draws this terrifying image of the New Prairie Witch looking out of the squad car laughing at Starman. It honestly gives me chills each time I look at it.

I think the comic that has frightened me the worst is Garth Ennis' Crossed.  Hardcore, terrifying stuff. It's a comic that represents the worst part of humanity, what would happen if all moral compasses were broken. Gives me the shivers.

Back when I was a youngin, I used to get comic books (with cassette accompaniment) from the local library. One in particualr was a Bizarro origin story (this was, like, back in the early 90's)...so, I'm listening to the tape and reading along and the Superman clone makes his full transformation into Bizarro, and there's the final transformation panel when he lets out a scream of rage, followed by a scream of rage from the cassette player. Always scared the bejeebus out of my no matter how many times I read it.

I can think of two moments from Sandman, the 24 hours storyline where we discover all the coffee shops customers worst memories and then in the collectors storyline with the guy talking about how he used to kill cats etc.
I jumped when reading from hell and we finally see gulls face in chapter two.

oh and one more, in Young Liars volume 1 when the guy gets his bits cut off. that shocked me

Killing joke, any story that deals with Gotham's one and only madhouse, the  penguin story from jokers asylum which proves his messed up as hell damn. Scarface and the ventriloquist because he is like the son of Sam in the DC universe, Maximum carnage and then maybe sometimes clown from spawn.

Ultimate when the Blob ate Janet, when they killed Dare Devil, and when they killed Wolverine and made it clear he was not regenerating from that. I was shocked.

Also Ultimate avengers when the Red Skull made AIM agents eat each other.
Batman RIP when Hush was going to put Bruce in a coffin and not let him out until he was a brain dead drooling mess to keep as a toy. The thought of Batman losing his brain and being a play thing to Hush and Joker was horrible.

The list Punisher when he got his head cut off.

When Richards was captured by the Leader and got his mind drained.
When the Skrull had Richards all stretched out and the rest were captured.

    When Aunt May was shot.
    Blackest Night's zombie baby attack.

    Gantz bathroom beating scene.

@longbowhunter: Do you mean the Rosewood vampire stories? I don't know that I've read them all.  I was only buying Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing &, sadly, my collection is pretty spotty. I do recall reading one story where a teenage boy is dragged under the water & subsequently becomes a vampire. Don't know if that's the specific story you're talking about. It was  very well written & atmospherically creepy.  Alan Moore was very adept at telling tales of chilling horror. He was a good fit for Swamp Thing.

I clearly remember a memorable scene from Grant Morrison's masterpiece Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth.  The part where Dr. Arkham
finds his murdered and violated family, with his daughter's head inside the doll-house
was the creepiest, most intense and most disturbing thing I had ever read.

Never been really scared or creeped out except once. I dug up (on the site because it's so user friendly =] ) what issue it was exactly.  This issue had Dr Reyes in a police interogation room and all she started to see were eyes of Prime Sentinels light up from the other side one by one the crash through and attack her. I had a nightmare I was in that position being attack but unfortunately my imagination couldn't even muster a dazzler to help me out.  I shudder even now. In my defence I would have been about 9 or 10.

I don't think I've really ever been frightened from a comic book. Although HBO's "Tales From the Crypt" (based on the popular comic) show used to give me the chills when I was a kid.

I do however get scared from those books that really make you wonder... "What the Hell was the writer thinking when he wrote that?" Seriously, after reading some 'underground' comic books it scares me to think there are some really sick minds out there in this world.
