I've never liked Watchmen nor the Killing Joke, and I've re-read them plenty of times trying to understand why they are held in such high regard.

Sure the stories are different and bring out new ideas rather than the normal re-hashed Superhero tales, but his writing just doesn't connect to me.

Not a bad thing, I don't agree with it but you are entitled to your opinion.

Is it bad that you have an opinion of your own that isn't necessarily popular? No, of course not.

While I love most (certainly not all) of Alan Moore's work, I can see how it wouldn't really resonate with everyone. We're all entitled to our opinions.

On second thought... no. Kill yourself immediately.

    Down Billy.

Seriously, the fact you posted this thread - to me - makes me think that it cannot be bad. Literature is subjective, but the fact that you have tried to enjoy something but weren't able to means that it just isn't for you. Not everyone can appreciate everything considered "good" in literature because at the end of the day it may just not resonate with you. However, you acknowledging that it is "deemed" good but not being able to appreciate it is the right move, I think anyways. I suggest either A. coming back to it in a few years or B. Reading more of his work, as aforementioned by Billy.

Damn! You nightmarish creatures are getting more and more advanced every day!

But seriously, I recommend you read his non-DC/Marvel work, although you may want to check out Swamp Thing and Captain Britain.

Your opinion is okay you really don't have to like his work, I personally find his other work that is not focused on superheroes a lot better I personally love his Jack the Ripper story "From Hell" more than the other things he's done.

If it's the tone of his work you have a problem with, try reading his Supreme. It's notably different.

I agree The Killing Joke isn't as good as everyone says it is, but Moore's Swamp Thing is amazing, as is stuff like Top 10

@NiKva: There's plenty of Moore I didn't enjoy much like myself. Hypothetical Lizard, From Hell, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen all come to mind. Also, I'd concede that Killing Joke is indeed overrated. Moore has a very large body of work though and has told a lot of different types of story's. You might very well find that you like some of his more upbeat and lighthearted fantasy/sci-fi work like....

    • Superman: For the Man who Has Everything
    • Action Comics: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
    • Supreme #41-56 and Supreme: The Return
    • Tom Strong

I didn't include V for Vendetta on that list because while it's a classic and a favorite of mine, it's done much in the heady, serious, gloomy fashion of Watchmen. I'm not sure how old you are and don't want to presume, but if you're younger you might find that you will connect more with stories like the Watchmen and V as you grow older. It also helps with stories like those to have a good grasp on history so that you can understand the context in which some of these stories are being told.

In any case. No author is for everyone. Personally, I can't stand Geoff Johns and he's been a top dog in the comics world for years now.

I am looking into reading some of Moore's work myself. The stuff I read about Alan Moore the person make him seem like a guy who takes himself way too seriously but by all accounts, his work is some of the better stuff out there.

Theres nothing wrong with not liking them if thats your honest opinion. I can't even tell you to acknowledge his talent, because even that is subjective. Subject to the majority, but subjective none the less.

Nothing wrong with your opinion at all, I happen to like Watchmen but Killing Joke is NOT as good as it's hyped up to be, I think Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow is way better. You should read Swamp Thing though 1984-1987 Volume 2 #20-64, its amazing I just finished it and I think its the best comic I ever read, and I cant ever read the 1985 Annual without tear'n up.

Seriously thought that giraffe with the duck.... I cant stop laughing.

@NiKva: There were a few good books from his ABC run as well. Tom Strong and Promethea were favorites of mine. I also enjoyed his work on Supreme, League of Extraordinary Gents, and From Hell. I never got into his older work.

I love 90% of his stuff, and my screen name is after a story he wrote. The exception, for me, has been "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" which never did it for me..for whatever reason.
