Age of Ultron Book One Review
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Penciler: Bryan Hitch
Inker: Paul Neary
Colorist: Paul Mounts
I often wonder why some comic books are legendary and some are after thoughts and after reading Age of Ultron #1 I think I have narrowed it down. The key of an epic book is having a writer that is in their peak and right now there isn’t anyone like Brian Michael Bendis.
While reading Age of Ultron I thought damn this is so good it must be Bendis. This guy is just known for greatness and he does not fall short in this first issue.
Age of Ultron gets so many things right and to start I need to point out the cover by Hitch, Nary & Mounts. Talk about judging a book by its cover! This cover screams so much to me that I just had to pick this up. While initially it looks like all of the Avengers have been defeated if you look really close there is a reflection of Hawkeye on Ultron's helmet which may be a pivotal plot point for this story.
From the opening panels we are thrown into a world that is in complete and utter destruction. Clearly Ultron has won the battle but the war seems to still be raging on….for Hawkeye anyway. In this apocalyptic world Bendis has created Humans that have become low lives who will do anything to stay alive which can include kidnapping your neighborhood spider-man. Clint is the only one of the Avengers that even makes an attempt to free Spidey and the rest the avengers are basically pissed off he did. Ultron has obviously broken the spirits of the Avengers some more than others…just asks Cap.
The Good
Brian Michael Bendis opens up this story so grand that you just have to take it all in. I mean I know we have seen the apocalyptic story done before but there is something special about Ultron just physically and emotionally breaking down the Avengers.
When were first introduced to Captain America the moment is priceless because without saying a word Bendis basically made Cap the symbol for how the world feels. To see one of my favorite heroes’s broken down like that was something else.
Words can’t really do justice for how Captain America looked like you’re just going to have to see for yourselves.
Also the art team of Paul Nearly & Paul Mounts used some pretty cool special effects that I haven’t seen before. What I mean by that is during Hawkeye’s rescue of Spider-Man the building they were occupying was being attacked and it almost seemed like the panels were vibrating.
The Bad
Brian Michael Bendis is a rock star and everything he touches is gold including Age of Ultron #1. At this point I would much rather tell you to stop reading this review and go pick up Age of Ultron now. I mean if this story becomes as legendary as I believe it will be then maybe Ultron will make it to the big screen someday.
Verdict
Brian Michael Bendis has done it again with this legendary story that will have you screaming for more- 5 out of 5
