Superman welcome back to the LSH- rejects and all. I must say that I have always had a bit of a soft spot for the Legion Subs and I am ecstatic they have returned to glory. Geoff Johns has demonstrated he not only understands the personalities of Dawnstar, Wildfire, Polar Boy, and Brainiac 5 (just to name a few) but he also captured the essence of the Subs. Fire Lad, Chlorophyll Kid, and Stone Boy were right in character. I do not believe I have seen Rainbow Girl before, but I fell in love with her mood swings immediately.
Johns has left no doubt in anyone's mind. This is NOT the pre-crisis LSH. It is stated twice that Night Girl is a full member of the Legion proper, not merely a member of the Subs. About freaking time if you ask me.
Johns does a great job of using the wealth of Legion lore yet keeping focused on the task of bringing down Earth-Man's Justice League. Each issue of the story has revolved around Superman, Dawnstar, Colossal Boy, Wildfire, Polar Boy and Brainiac 5 as the main team and uses the others in supporting capacity. He is also great about slipping in the whereabouts of other characters such as Infectious Lass, Double Header, Color Kid, etc. In my view Yera Allon has not been used in this capacity ever. I hope she stays on as a Legionnaire.
I know that some folks on the DC message boards have been whining about the new costumes. I like a lot of them. Polar Boy, Dawnstar, Wildfire, Cosmic Boy, and Invisible Kid look incredible. Brainy's face shows intelligence, arrogance, and mental instability all at the same time. I love it.
The best line in the story "Hey Dori! I'm supposed to be leader this week!" Said by Fire Lad in true Subs fashion
The story gets 5 stars - it has everything I want in a good story - action, drama, a bit of humor and great characters. There are no card board cut outs here each individual is unique in their words and actions not just in their powers and looks.
I'm going to give the art work 5 stars as well. Gary Frank's story telling is artful, yet action packed.
I hope that a new Legion series evolves out of this story line. Fantastic stories and fantastic art. Here's to hoping Johns and Frank have a long run with this version of the LSH
