All Hallow's Eve
Going back and reading/ reviewing assorted back issues of Action Comics, I've unfortunately stumbled across a lot of issues that are merely "ok". This is one of them, and with a comic that has been running for so long, I can't really play the blame game. This one held particular interest for me because the cover prominently featured The Spectre. The Spectre is one of DC's greats. The story takes place on Halloween. And with no explanation whatsoever, Satanus is causing trouble in Metropolis by sending ghosts to keep The Spectre at bay. Superman just wants the two of them out of the city before damage is caused. Lois does her usual act of getting into needless trouble, and frankly the weakest part of this issue is that the fight between the Spectre and Satanus could have been cool, or at least explained, but it's never addressed. I was also not a fan of the deus ex machina solution of Superman's altruism being able to prevent Satanus from harboring his soul. All in all, some decent Byrne art and an appearance from the Wrath of God himself, The Spectre, are about the only two saving graces this comic has. Everything just felt flat, which in the context of coming shortly after Gail Simone's fairly lackluster run on Action, is not a good thing.
