“AESOP’S MODERN FABLES.” An escaped prisoner named Johnny Aesop, ribbed when he was younger about his last name, decides to commit crimes based on the ancient fables to gain wealth and notoriety.

Superman: Thief Johnny Aesop breaks out of jail and plans a series of crimes based on the morals from Aesop's fables. Before each crime, he sends a cryptic message to the Planet. His first crime involves rigging a boat race so the boat he bets on will win, but Superman manages to foil the plot and capture three of Aesop's men. For his second crime, he steals a priceless objet d'art from a mansion. As Superman chases after him, he covers his escape with sleeping gas causing traffic chaos, which Superman has to clear up allowing Aesop's escape.

For his next crime, he kidnaps Lois and holds her hostage to prevent Superman interfering. Aesop's gang stage a robbery in a night club, but Superman foils this one as well, as gets the thugs to tell him where Lois is being held.

As Superman breaks into Aesop's hideout, Aesop threatens to shoot Lois unless Superman backs off, but then Aesop gets another in a series of headaches that have plagued him for several years.

Superman discovers that the headaches are caused by a bone chip pressing into his brain, and massages Aesop's head to remove the pressure. Aesop then returns to his old self, where he was a law-abiding citizen. Although he is still prepared to pay for his crimes, Superman convinces the judge to release him into Superman's custody.
