Always loved monsters
There will be spoilers in this review so please make sure you read the issue first if you're planning to. I'm reading all the villain month issues so I can give the New Reader perspective. Most of what I know of Zod is from pop culture and not comics so it'll be interesting to see how he looks here.
The Good: This issue's got a lot of good. It actually gives a good reason for Zod to act as violent and warmongering as he always seems to be and adds an interesting layer to his personal philosophy. He comes across as a complete warrior and it's interesting to see him react to the more scientific Kryptonian society. There's a lot of really good memorable moments in this issue and a lot of that has to do with the very well done expressions.
The Bad:
Young Zod is a little to anime for my tastes. But on a more serious note there's not much to complain about here. Zod's allies are pretty bland in this one and a lot of we really get one hint of how Zod's going to get out of the Phantom Zone.
Overall:
This was a really good issue, I'd heard it was quality stuff but man this one was out of the park for me. If you want to get into Superman or you're reading Superman already check this one out. Really if you just want to see a neat little story about an interesting villain this is a good place to check.
