As a result of M-day, only 27 of the 182 students enrolled at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning still retained their powers. In response to the increasingly desperate situation that mutants now faced, Emma Frost disbanded all the former training squads (most of which had lost much of their membership to the Decimation) and integrated those students she deemed capable of combat.
I loved it as it was, but I would have prefered that it wasn't cancelled. If it was rebooted, it would be with a creative team that had the standard of the Kyle & Yost run to live up to... and very few people can do that.

never like kyle and yost run on new x men so mucht' do brutal
I agree that they need a good team if they want to return to New X-Men. They need to undo the damage done by horrible Young X-Men. And don't allow Surge to stay a leader! She became too annoying, it's time to teach her a lesson of humility (like vote for a leader in issue #1 and find out that nobody voted for her).
I'd prefer the main cast members (Elixir, Hellion, Prodigy, Surge, Rockslide, Anole, Dust, Mercury etc) to be written into the core cast of the main X-Books and handled by competent writers (Carey, Yost etc). On the other hand, I wouldn't mind them being added to the cast of a book like New Mutants, replacing a few of the current characters, as long as the writer(s) took into account the events of New X-Men and what they've been through since. The remaining younger mutants could feature as background characters in the book.
