Aaron McGruder was born in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to Columbia, Maryland when he was six, because his father got a job with The National Transportation Safety Board. Went to a Jesuit school from grades 7 to 9 and then a public high school. Then he attend the University of Maryland, in which he earned a degree in African American Studies.
In the University he created The Boondocks for his campus newspaper, The Diamondback. His Boondocks series was then collected in many trade paperbacks as well as get its own TV adaptation: The Boondocks.
He currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
