“A Batman who laughs is a Batman who always wins.”
Left rattled by the events of DARK NIGHTS: METAL, Bruce Wayne must come face to face with the nightmares spawned from the Dark Multiverse. But even though evil devoured evil in the collapse of Challengers Mountain, the Dark Knight still has his doubts. He discovers that the Batman Who Laughs not only survived the fight with The Joker at the end of METAL, but now he is enacting a sinister plan across the Multiverse—something both terrifying and oddly familiar. But when Bruce Wayne realizes the only way to stop this madman is to kill him, he must consider violating the very rule Batman won’t break…the same rule that created this insatiable villain—the Batman Who Laughs!
Years ago, Bruce Wayne used to play a game with his parents, he would try to run in the house and they would try to stop him and the game would turn into a big family hug.
Now, Batman stops some smugglers from sneaking a corpse out of Gotham. The corpse turns out to be the body of Bruce Wayne from another dimension, one where after his fight with Bane, Batman stopped fighting crime, got married, had a kid with Selina, named May, and was happy. This discovery lead Batman to realize the Batman Who Laughs was back in Gotham.
Meanwhile, in Arkham Asylum, the Grim Knight and the Batman Who Laugh kill several guards, torching Mr. Freeze and finally killing man posing as the Joker.
After hearing all this Batman realizes the Joker left him a message and opens the waterway in the Batcave. The Joker swims up and shoots himself in the heart, releasing a toxin that turns Batman into a Jokerized version.
