Grendel. A name synonymous with crime and violence. Hunter Rose. A name familiar with wealth and privilege. Grendel: Black, White, and Red is the long-anticipated series that brings together an impressive array of talented artists, spearheaded by creator Matt Wagner. Wagner writes these tales of punishment and revenge, corruption and despondence, illustrated in black-white-and-red by artists John Paul Leon (Challengers of the Unknown), Tim Sale (Batman: The Long Halloween), Duncan Fegredo (Jay & Silent Bob), D'Israeli (House of Secrets), and Ho Che Anderson (Young Hoods in Love). When dealing with the Devil, the least he'll take is your soul!

"Devil's Advocate" (Tim Sale) tells the story of how a good man was blackmailed into becoming Grendel's lawyer, losing everything he cared about in the process.

In "Devil's Mate" (D'Israeli), Hunter explains the complexity of chess to an uninterested Stacy, while in a flashback, he slaughters the people who run an underage brothel. He then calls Argent to say he is going to kill Everett Christie, who is involved with the brothel. This phone call is how the very first Grendel appearance, in Comico Primer #2, begins.

"Devil's Toll" (JP Leon) is an impressionistic series of images, with one word per panel, that illustrate the downfall of a crime lord who runs afoul of Grendel.

"Devil's Tongue" (Duncan Fegredo) shows Grendel torturing a low-level criminal for information about a competing smuggling operation.

"Devil's Thrush" (Ho Che Anderson) is about a failed singer strung out on drugs. Hunter knew her in the old days and, surprisingly, takes pity on her, telling her dealing to cancel the money she owes him. However, she kills herself before she finds out.
