The time is now in the 1980s, in New York City. Argent lives in abandoned housing, killing random criminals--anyone he feels is among the guilty. The police know of him, and mostly approve of his existence, as he is able to take care of things that they can't.

He is continually tormented by the spirits of the dead, such as Dog Leg, Eagle Scratch, Billy Cloudleg, Charlie Mantooth, and Jacques One-Foot. However, he cannot speak to the spirit of his old love, Wind-in-the-Leaves--her spirit has been set free from the world, and he will never see her again.

One day, he saves Evan St. Clair, a gay Native American con-man, from some skinheads. He later finds him again and starts to stay in his apartment. Evan, who is otherwise a thoroughly dissolute individual, and Argent begin to learn from one another. Argent shows Evan the meaning of pride and respect, and Evan shows Argent humanity.

One day the police come to their door. They want Argent to start working directly with them. They think they can finally make a move on Grendel through a middleman, Barry Palumbo. Argent agrees, and in so doing meets Palumbo's young niece, Stacy. He falls in a sort of love with Stacy.

Finally, it is time to spring the trap on Grendel. However, Palumbo double-crosses Argent and has assassins try to shoot him. Evan stops them, at the price of being (non-fatally) shot himself. Argent goes on to meet Grendel at Palumbo's, and their famous rivalry begins.
