One of the world's most iconic characters has returned to the heart of the DC Universe, and every step he takes will shake the foundations of the Earth! Alec Holland has his life back…but the Green has plans for it. A monstrous evil is rising in the desert, and it'll take a monster of another kind to defend life as we know it!

This series starter begins by showing Batman, Superman, and Aquaman all looking out to their respective cities or hideouts and watching the animals all around them die. Elsewhere, in Louisiana, Alec Holland is working with a lumber company, building a house. He chats with a fellow worker and when the man leaves, Superman swoops in. There are flashes to an archeological dig in Arizona where a mammoth skeleton is being uncovered. Superman and Alec discuss the need for Alec to complete his work with the bio-restorative formula, after he refuses Superman leaves. Back in Arizona the archeologist come back to the site only to be attacked by the resurrected mammoth.

Later that evening Alec has a nightmare of the Swamp Thing's genesis. When he wakes up the entire motel room is covered in flowers. He goes to his safe, opens it, takes the bio-restorative formula, and runs out of the room. Just as he is about to throw the formula into the swamp he is stopped by a vine attached to the hand of a Swamp Thing.

Swamp Thing lives up to high expectations as Scott Snyder and Yanick Paquette narrow the focus in on Alec Holland, the scientist who died and may or may not have become Swamp Thing before getting better. The mythology of Swamp Thing can be confusing, but you probably wouldn't realize that from reading this issue. By focusing on Holland, the story is grounded in such a way that it is easy for readers to step into the world and not become lost.  One thing is for sure. Snyder did some research in o...

This was easily my favorite of the new DC books this year. Like any other DC book I read this week, I have zero experience with DC and Swamp Thing. Everything I know about Swamp Thing I learned from here. Not really the most detailed source, I think you'd agree.Scott Snyder goes out of his way to make us care about plants in this first issue because he's got to. Swamp Thing is vegetation. Alec Holland is a botanist. If you didn't already know, the plant world is just as vicious and violent as th...
