The issue opens with The Authority fighting a losing battle against an endless horde of tentacled monsters. Every member of the team is either dead or dying. Midnighter watches Apollo die and goes berserk, charging the creatures and yelling. It looks like he gets overpowered and just as seems like he's going to die, it is revealed that he is hooked up to some machine that is meant to recreate a virtual scenario. The rest of The Authority is gathered around Midnighter as he is unplugged from the device and behind them the dead bodies of what appear to workers at the facility lay on the ground. The team takes Midnighter back to The Carrier and The Engineer kills the last living worker in the building.
Back on The Carrier Midnighter thinks The Doctor is a tentacle monster and hits him. In response, the team puts him in an energy field to hold him. A very pissed off Midnighter angers The Engineer until she lets him go but before they start to fight, Jenny says Midnighter needs to take a break. He starts to refuse but then he sees Jenny as a monster and agrees to go.
In the Philippines, Grifter uses his hypnotic powers to get a suicide bomber to walk back to his own base and blow himself up along with all his terrorist friends. In the room where he's staked out, he and two agents from some unnamed organization talk about his abilities. They tell him he should use them to serve his country and he get them to draw their guns on each other. When he releases them from his control, one agent pulls a gun on him but he just walks away.
