So just the other day I stopped by the comic book store with the intentions of not buying a Batman comic for the first time in like... Forever.
There I am browsing through the graphic novels and trade paperbacks when I see Y: The Last Man and 100 Bullets. It was a tough decision but I finally caved and purchased the first 3 volumes of 100 Bullets, at a relatively cheap price as well, so it was a win win situation for me.
I get home and later that night I pull First Shot, Last Call outta my bag and start reading it, Pepsi in hand, Doritos close beside me.
And boy, did I read.
After beginning with the intention of reading 1 chapter I soon realized I was hooked after just 3 pages, and ended up staying up until 5am entranced by this story that I had never thought to read before..
And the very next day I went straight back into the comic book shop and bought the next 3 volumes of this incredible series, at a slightly more expensive rate.. Guess they thought they could raise the prices because everyone reading it would be hooked like me, eh?
And after barely scratching the surface on this story, I can safely say without any hesitation, that 100 Bullets is easily one of the greatest comic books ever written. The plot is deceptively complex, introducing fantastic new characters in almost every chapter, while giving them the development a good character deserves, without ever taking away from the story itself.
The premise itself is a simple one at the start, The mysterious Agent Graves approaches someone who has been terribly wronged in their life. He gives them an Attache containing 100 untraceable bullets, a handgun, and documents concerning the person solely responsible for the victim's wrongs. He does not force them to kill, he simply gives them the opportunity to set things straight. If they take up the offer to kill the person responsible, any law enforcement will stop with their investigation once they uncover one of the bullets.
Still following? Good. Because that's only the tip of the iceberg Baby.
From there we are introduced to The Trust, a group of individuals whose goal is to change the world, and The Minutemen, a group of 7 men employed by The Trust.
You still following? Great. Because you're still only scratching the iceberg Baby.
I won't spoil anymore but if you haven't read it by now you owe to yourself to check this out. I'm considering bringing it in to my English Teacher to make him read it, and I am in the process of making my immediate family, and even the weird ones who I don't talk to read this series, because it is truly a work of art..
I won't give it a score because I have only read 6 volumes, so give me a few weeks and I'll get back to you. Until then...
... CROATOA!
